HELLO!
So many tests!!
We finished our last test today. It was the third time for our SRI, and results will arrive before the SBAC scores, which should arrive in late August.
Parents are needed to help with Friday's Science Olympiad. It's a lot of fun, and I encourage you to offer your morning! You will be surrounded by our enthusiastic students, and help with one of the many activities. Neighbors, relatives, high school students, nannies,... they are all welcome!
Our Chess Tournament continues to go strong. At this moment in time, the only players still in the game are: Ella, Imanol, Walker, & Jack L.F.

HELLO!
We won't be able to see SBAC Scores until August or September. A lot of the test requires hand scoring, and since almost every child in California are taking the test, it requires quite a long time to score the tests.
Roaring Camp Trip was a terrific experience... including our ride in fancy busses!
SMUGMUG PICTURES & VIDEOS AVAILABLE
Pictures for easy download and/or ordering are found on our SmugMug Site -- Password: Ollie
--Thank you, especially to Gina Preston (Jack's mom) and Isa Dyzers (Antoine's mom) fort taking the pictures!
Note -- By rolling over the pictures, you can see if they are a video or regular picture.
Our First Chess Tournament is going strong. At this moment in time, the only players still in the game are: William, Imanol, Walker, Jack L.F., J.T., Ariel, Ella, and Antoine. The rest are practicing hard for our Second Chess Tournament.

HELLO!
Whew! Exciting times last week!!
I think that all of us are glad to say "Goodbye" to our SBAC Tests. We (including this teacher) are all hoping that we did well. The children seemed pretty confident throughout... I guess we will find out. :-)
I want to guarantee you that the children gave it their all. The test questions looked very difficult, and our "champions" (as I'm thinking of the students) didn't rush through, but persevered for the best answer that they could muster. Their skill at keyboarding REALLY helped!
Thank you to those who provided snacks... Famlies: Cheng, Linse, Preston, Hochstetler, Bidlack, Klingsporn, and Spieker. Every day we had water, mandarin oranges, cheese sticks or crackers, and gum. I'm now a confirmed believer in keeping the mouth busy during a test. For some reason, it seemed to increase focus. It's the first time that I ever tried it, but it really seemed to calm the nerves.
FIELD TRIP THIS WEDNESDAY!
A reminder that this Wednesday, May 10th is the Roaring Camp field trip.
- 7AM DEPARTURE, recommend arrive at 6:50AM
- Return at 4PM
- Bring sack lunch and water
- Wear closed toe shoes
- Apply sunscreen
- Wear layers
- Bring electronics at own risk

HELLO!
I received some beautiful cards today from the children. Thank you!
Our official testing begins on Thursday morning and continues through the following Friday. Please make sure that your child gets a good night's sleep each night before our tests. Tests are a good time to "show off," I am hoping that the children are relaxed, confident, careful, and will fight for difficult answers (persevere when a problem seems hard).
A fun idea!
A little message, written to your child, can work wonders during a long test! You can include a picture of a family member, pet, or ?? and include your own words of encouragement for the test. The note can be a secret (kept in their desk or pocket), or... the note can be shaped into a star (or whatever) that they can tape to their desk. One note can last throughout the whole testing period. It should not be fragile or easily toppled over, and no larger than 4" X 4".

HELLO!
Welcome back to school! Hope that you had a nice week to enjoy with family.
SCIENCE FAIR - Absolutely Awesome. I'm sorry I haven't posted the videos yet. I will, and will let you know when I do.
MATH -
We are reviewing all work from the past year and will be jumping around to fill in vacant holes.
The goal for the next two weeks is for each child to cover as many pages as they can in the booklets or chapters that I assign. I will individualize pace if I need to. However... each child is expected to keep up with the pace of pages listed below. The goal is to work faster, if your child is able, to beat my pace. The pace is set so that everyone works --at the very least-- at Brewbaker's expected pace. By the way... most of the children are heading into the upcoming tests with strength. I have a feeling that we will be scoring very well. BTW: We did incredibly well, as a class, in both reading and writing. Here comes Math!! Whoo Hoo! I'm eager to see the final scores... I'm that confident.

- I can help you out (parents and children), if you find yourself floundering. I will offer my time during the lunch period if you or your child asks for help.
- The best thing to prepare for, on Science Fair Night, is a 30 second (plus+) speech about your experiment. Children can use the board to guide their speech (like a note card), but you want to look at your "listener" for the most part. Have your speech mostly memorized. :-)

We leave Oak Knoll at 8:00 am. Children should arrive in the classroom by 7:45. We cannot wait for late children :-(
NOTE!!! If you want to order lunch... I must know by this Thursday! Yikes!!! That's tomorrow!
REPORT WRITING! We are refining our skills in writing. You can see some of our progress, made in the last several weeks. Visit our Bulletin Board
HOMEWORK for MONDAY, Feb. 27 ... Each student will bring in three sources for information on a topic he/she would like to research for their upcoming report. One source must be a published book. Other information can be found from the internet, Encyclopedia, Magazine, Notes from an interviewed expert, or other sources that can be trusted. Their report can be California related, or on a person, animal, tribe, or any number of other choices.
I will be teaching them how to take notes on notecards, so don't start writing reports over the weekend without this lesson. Thanks!
SCIENCE FAIR COMING UP ON MARCH 22nd. There are many sources for experiments, but I've got downloadable experiments on my Science Fair Web Page (an old site I can no longer upgrade). Good stuff! I'll be teaching how to conduct a Science Fair Experiment within the next couple weeks. It's a good time to start thinking about what you might want to do. Two students may work together if they wish, but not three student teams. I will have a sign-up sheet, and will discourage fizzy-foam experiments that are lots of fun to do, but are also too common at Science Fairs. BREWBAKER'S SCIENCE FAIR PAGE - HERE

HELLO!
VALENTINES DAY is tomorrow, and it is important that your child complete the project. Please, please, please ... EVERYONE must do these slips at home and bring them to school tomorrow. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
KEYBOARDING! Children have been complaining about keyboarding problems at home. The program doesn't work, or doesn't send info to school, or...
Room Parent, Brooke Heckert (Ella's mom), called the program developers for help. This is what she has learned... "Note: If you are having trouble with the typing app, please select About Chrome from the Chrome menu and then select "update Chrome" or "relaunch chrome". See attachment.
CORRECT PAPERS FOR BETTER SCORES (and better understanding. Children may do this for Writing Papers, Pop Quizzes, Math Tests, etc. Sorry, I don't accept corrected "Fact Pages."
Please let me know of questions and/or concerns that you have... it's important that I hear them.

HELLO!
VALENTINES DAY is coming next week! WhooHoo! This is one of my favorite events of the year. Packets are going home Tuesday, and it is important that your child complete the project. The writing happens at home, and it is important to pace the job out. It's bigger than it appears. Information is in the packet and I have talked to the children.
KEYBOARDING! Our goal is to reach 35 wpm by the end of March. As soon as your child hits 35 wpm, they can type up their projects. Most children should be working on this at home for about 15 min. per night. I have a lapel pin to honor children with, as they achieve this goal. I'm looking forward to 100% success.
POP QUIZZES! You will soon see graded math quizzes in your child's back 'n forth folders. Grades are recorded, but a child can correct their test to improve their score.
Math! Because of supplemental work, many of the pages in our Workbooks are redundant, therefore I am selecting pages that provide more rigor than repetition. On the other hand, some of your children will be asked to work supplemental practice papers if they show a need in a specific area.
Please let me know of questions and/or concerns that you have... it's important that I hear them.

HELLO!
There are some new things going on, and I think that you will like what you see.
First... Brew's News is taking on a new format.
The original printed format, which I also copied to my webpage, took too much time. As you know, minutes add up, and I need those minutes to work on other classroom needs. You've probably noticed Brew's News appearing less and less often... and I'm sorry I didn't find a solution earlier.
The good news is, I have an easier, faster way of getting you the information that you need. This newest version will always be at the top of --THIS-- page. Scroll down for older information, and each Monday, I will mail you the link.
Second... I want to assure you that the year is going well, and our progress is on target. Your child will be fully prepared and ready for 5th grade. You will remember that I promised this at the beginning of the year, and there is not a doubt in my mind... they are exactly where I want them to be. I will make it easy for you to follow your child's progress, through better communication. You will see more graded papers, and I will work hard to fill you in on details you may not be fully cognizant of.
The following is the basic format I will use each week. I will be explaining things you may not recognize such as "Pop Quizzes" in my next Brew's News on Monday.
Please let me know of questions and/or concerns that you have... it's important that I hear them.
